Great Britain also known as Britain  is an island in the North Atlantic off the north-west coast of continental Europe.

Great Britain London

With an area of 229,848 km2 (88,745 sq mi), it is the largest island of the British Isles, the largest island in Europe and the ninth-largest in the world. In 2011,  the island had a population of about 61 million people, making it the third-most populous island in the world, after Java (Indonesia) and Honshū (Japan).

It is surrounded by over 1,000 smaller islands. The island of Ireland lies to its west.

Great Britain Bath

The island is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constituting most of its territory: most of England, Scotland, and Wales are on the island, with their respective capital cities, London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff.

Politically, the term Great Britain usually extends to include surrounding islands that form part of England, Scotland, and Wales.

The Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the Union of Scotland and England (which already comprised the present-day England and Wales) in 1707.

More than a hundred years before, in 1603, King James VI, King of Scots, had inherited the throne of England, but it was not until 1707 that the Parliaments of the two countries agreed to form a single kingdom. Subsequently, in 1801, Great Britain united with the neighboring Kingdom of Ireland, forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

The UK has a partially regulated market economy.

Tourism is an industry at which Britain competes well internationally – we rate 8th in the world for visitor numbers and visitor spend.

It is also forecast to be one of Britain’s best performing sectors over the next decade, with the value added contribution to the economy growing at 3.5% per annum. This would mean tourism showing faster growth than more recognized industries such as manufacturing, utilities, retailing, transport and communications.

Whilst Britain performs well, international tourism is a fiercely competitive business and our competitors are upping their game. We want to ensure Britain captures its share of global tourism growth.

To See
  • Stonehenge – One of top tourist attractions in England, Stonehenge is among the most important prehistoric sites in the world. It was produced by a culture that left no written records so many aspects of Stonehenge remain subject to debate.
  • Big Ben – The 150 year old Big Ben Clock Tower is one of London’s top attractions. The name Big Ben actually refers not to the clock tower itself, but to the 13 ton bell housed within the tower and takes its name from the man who first ordered the bell, Sir Benjamin Hall.
  • Windsor Castle – Located about an hour west of London, Windsor Castle is often called the largest and oldest inhabited castle in the world.
  • York Minster – One of the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe (alongside Cologne Cathedral in Germany), York Minster dominates the skyline of the ancient city of York.
  • Durham Cathedral – The greatest Norman building in England and perhaps even in Europe. It is cherished not only for its architecture but also for its incomparable setting.
  • Tower of London – Now home to the British Crown Jewels, the Tower of London served as a prison from 1100 to the mid twentieth century.
